We have Sunday School classes every Sunday morning throughout the school year, starting at 9:00 for children and adults... The First and Third Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm Pins and Needles is currently meeting at the home of Dena Travelsted. We meet each Wednesday morning at 9:00 am until around 11:30 or 12. The St Stephens Food Pantry is on the fourth Friday of the month from 11am-1pm and fourth Saturday of the month from 9am- 11am A message of hope and renewal, reminding us of God’s unwavering presence in every season of life. When you give your tithe and offerings, it helps support our church staff, fund our outreach programs, provide updates to our buildings, get supplies for our youth groups, and so much more. The name of St Stephen’s was assumed in November 1958. St Stephen’s was officially born on May 10, 1959 In the intervening years, St Stephen’s sought to serve her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A new building was erected at Highway 67 and Mann Road in Indianapolis, where we met for worship and fellowship and served our community over the next 30 years. The church membership grew and then declined as the neighborhood became more industrial. In November 1993, St Stephen’s closed its doors on Mann Rd. The congregation of St Stephen’s voted to relocate to Plainfield. While waiting for our new building, we shared a building with the congregation of St Mark’s Episcopal Church On February 25, 1996, St Stephen’s moved into our new home in the Saratoga Development, just west of Plainfield and north of US 40. Considering that the early church worshipped in large settings - in the synagogues - as well as in homes, we unite together similarly in order to be in deeper fellowship with God and one another. God has reconciled us not only to Himself but also to each other. This "each other" is called His Church. The mission of our Church is to glorify God by making disciples through the gospel of Jesus Christ. God’s mission and the mission of His Church are inseparably linked. As Jesus Christ works in and through us to fulfill our mission and pursue our vision, we expect to see results in three areas: Community Transformation, New Church Formation, Next Generation Empowerment. I was the church treasurer for St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Uniondale, IN for four years. Currently for the last two years I’ve been treasurer for St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. I am Tom Stempson a Synod Authorized Minister (SAM). As a SAM I am able to fill the role of a Pastor in Word and Sacrament for St Stephen’s. I grew up in Colorado and graduated from Colorado State University. Upon graduation in 1973, I entered the Army as a Lieutenant. Through the Army, I obtained a master’s degree from Boston University in Psychology and Human Resources. I retired from military service after 27 years on active duty and National Guard service as a Lieutenant Colonel. Having always had an interest in theology, I had the opportunity in 2013 to pursue two years of seminary training through the Synod’s Diakonia program. Your family is always welcome. The heart of children's ministry at our church is to teach kids about who God is and how His word applies to their lives in creative and memorable ways. Through engaging teaching, supportive environments, and close knit small group classes, we guide kids towards a better understanding of what it means to have a real relationship with God. We want kids to know that the Bible is full of interesting stories that matter in their lives today, that fun and games are definitely allowed at church, that worship can be full of loud music and silly dancing, and that there are adults in the church who truly want to love and lead them closer to Jesus. In other words, we want them to know that where God is, life is a lot more fun! If you spend any time around our church at all, you'll quickly learn one thing: we love students. They're smart. They're funny. They're bold. And they're bursting with potential. We truly believe that the middle and high school students in our midst are world changers in the making. That's why student ministry is such a huge part of what we do at our church. We want to guide our students in developing a personal faith in Christ as they step into their specific roles in the story He's writing with their lives. We work hard to create environments that engage students in good conversation about God, encouraging them to ask questions, search out answers, and truly learn to listen to His leading in their lives. The Adult Sunday School is held each Sunday (except for a few special event Sundays) through the fall, winter, and spring from 9:00 to 9:50 pm Sunday morning in the fellowship hall.  We openly discuss various topics and related Bible verses that reflect the season, current events, social issues, or are just plain fun to talk about. Long ago my dear friend Melody said to me, help me start a food pantry, sure I said thinking it would be a temporary thing that would fade away, there’s not that many who need help. Years later to my surprise our pantry is going strong. I’m learning what it means to be food insecure through education, networking with other pantries and by watching communities grow and change. I realized that we also have to adapt to the changing needs of our neighbors. It’s predicted one million Hoosiers will require food assistance at some point in their lives. Our pantry continues to evolve as it helps neighbors in need of food assistance. With our boxes we strive to have some items the same every month but due to budget restraints, economic supply and demand, the donations we receive each box can be different. Our hours are 9am to 11am as a drive thru pantry on the 4th Saturday of every month with pre packed boxes. Also we have a Blessing Box that is open to the public, we try our best to keep food items in the box. This is a place where you can leave unopened food items. Please take weather into consideration when leaving items due to heat or severe cold conditions. We operate the food pantry with a core group of wonderful volunteers from the congregation, their relatives, friend of friends it ebbs and flows. We provide four rain barrels and two yard hydrants with 100-foot hoses for watering. A committee of St. Stephen’s members maintains the garden, which is open from late April to early November every year. This means worshiping and following Jesus Christ not only through our words, but also through our lives. We began in 2001 when a group of core members, along with our senior pastor started meeting weekly at a local coffee shop. In 2005 we moved into an old church building and have been worshiping there ever since! The Gospel is ultimately about humanity being restored to God’s community. Only through practicing community will individuals grow fully in the grace and knowledge to be found in Jesus. Furthermore, it is through community that a fragmented world can best witness the power of the Gospel and the nature of God’s work. As a culture of confession, transformation, friendship, forgiveness, justice, power, and love springs up in the lives of normal people, those who don’t know Christ will be compelled to ask: "what is happening?" - We openly discuss various topics and related Bible verses that reflect the season, current events, social issues, or are just plain fun to talk about. It is suited for mature teens and all adults. We have a small group of young people in our Sunday morning Sunday School. Our lessons are Bible based and are mostly discussions. We are open to suggestions as far as where we want to go with our Sunday school. The goal right now is to keep young people engaged in conversations and questions about the Bible and the Lutheran ways. All youth jr. high and high school age as well as any student who can read and would like to join us Confirmation is in two Parts. We do Year One and Year Two. We study Scripture from both the Old and the New Testament as well as Luther's Small Catechism. In Year One, we read The Witch, the Lion, and the Wardrobe. In Year Two, we read a graphic novel on Martin Luther. Confirmation takes place in both the Fall and the Winter after Service. Confirmation is through a reaffirmation of their Baptism. Communion instruction is offered in two parts, Year One and Year Two. Students study Scripture from the Old and New Testaments and Luther’s Small Catechism, with a focus on the meaning of the Lord’s Supper. Instruction takes place in the Fall and Winter after worship services. As a SAM I am able to fill the role of a Pastor in Word and Sacrament for St Stephen’s. I grew up in Colorado and graduated from Colorado State University. Upon graduation in 1973, I entered the Army as a Lieutenant. Through the Army, I obtained a master’s degree from Boston University in Psychology and Human Resources. I retired from military service after 27 years on active duty and National Guard service as a Lieutenant Colonel. Having always had an interest in theology, I had the opportunity in 2013 to pursue two years of seminary training through the Synod’s Diakonia program. After graduating from the Diakonia program, I completed training as a Stephen Minister and became a Stephen Leader. I have been at St Stephen’s since 2022. The current Pastor left for a career as a Navy Chaplain in the Fall of 2023, leaving the church without a Pastor. I felt the calling to be a SAM and was granted that status by the Bishop in Spring of 2024. I live in Avon with my wife Shirley. In my spare time, I volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Hendricks County and Sheltering Wings. I’ve been married for 45 years and blessed with two children and five grandchildren. I worked at the Wells County Community Foundation in Bluffton, IN for 18 years as a Financial Assistant. I was the church treasurer for St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Uniondale, IN for four years. Currently for the last two years I’ve been treasurer for St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church. I have been a member of St Stephens since 2007. I have been married to my wife Jodi since 2008 and we have three daughters (15, 12 and 8). I currently serve on the congregational counsel and property committee in addition to my role as Technology Director. I currently run the live stream of the service on Sunday. I am also an automobile enthusiast and own an all original 1971 Datsun 240Z. The Santa Shop provides children up to age 12 an opportunity to purchase gifts for family members and surprise them on Christmas morning. Friendly elves help the children buy the presents, which are then gift wrapped so they’re a surprise for Mom, Dad, brother or sister. The gifts are donated by the St. Stephen’s congregation and are for sale at kid-friendly prices. We try to make sure shut-ins as well as people who are ill or have lost a family member receives a card from the church. Each month we pay $2.00 per person and the money goes into our general fund. We start each meeting by enjoying a brown bag lunch together. Then our meeting starts with a devotion and prayer. We then conduct or business meeting. After which we have a dessert. Everyone brings their particular project. Some crochet, some rug hooking, some working on quilts and some doing other sewing projects. We occasionally do a special project together or do a service project for the community. We usually enjoy coffee and rolls and share show and tell. Then on to work helping each other out when needed. Great learning and fellowship. Luther held sessions in various pubs, kitchens or on walks in the woods. Our program meets in the Church Fellowship Hall at 6:30 PM during the months having daylight savings time and 3:30 during months not having daylight savings time to allow folks to avoid driving home in the dark. We do follow Luther’s habit of bringing a brown bag meal to each session. Our conversations cover a vast array of topics as did Luther in his day. We discuss religious doctrine, scripture, biblical interpretation, Lutheranism, church history, and commentaries on contemporary society. We are open to talking about whatever may be concerning to people. Your family is always welcome. The Adult Sunday School is held each Sunday (except for a few special event Sundays) through the fall, winter, and spring from 9:00 to 9:50 pm Sunday morning in the fellowship hall. We openly discuss various topics and related Bible verses that reflect the season, current events, social issues, or are just plain fun to talk about. It is suited for mature teens and all adults. Table Talk is loosely based on Martin Luther’s Table Talk teachings from the 1600’s. Luther held sessions in various pubs, kitchens or on walks in the woods. Our program meets in the Church Fellowship Hall at 6:30 PM during the months having daylight savings time and 3:30 during months not having daylight savings time to allow folks to avoid driving home in the dark. We do follow Luther’s habit of bringing a brown bag meal to each session. Our conversations cover a vast array of topics as did Luther in his day. We discuss religious doctrine, scripture, biblical interpretation, Lutheranism, church history, and commentaries on contemporary society. We are open to talking about whatever may be concerning to people.
